Traditional Christmas Storytelling at Kilkenny Libraries: Seanchaí, Mr. Jim Maher will bring his unique Christmas Story-telling to four libraries around the county over the coming week.  The performance, which is produced by local man Mr Geoff Rose, will commence with a reading of the classic poem "A Child’s Christmas in Wales" by Dylan Thomas. Jim will then tell some of his own "Christmas Stories" and the evening will conclude with his reading of the classic seasonal poem from Patrick Kavanagh "A Christmas Childhood”. Jim is a native of County Kilkenny and has been involved in traditional music and storytelling for over 30 years. His stories, on the night, will be accompanied by the bodhrán and other musical instruments.  He uses music to punctuate his stories and sees it as both a visual and a sound effect. Jim takes us back in time to a world of storytelling which has been handed down over the centuries and is in danger of being lost in the technologies of today. These stories remind us of what’s in all of us: a roguish sense of humour, a taste for the quirks and foibles of life at it was.  These performances are suitable for all the family, young and old. The dates and locations are John’s Quay Dec 9th, Loughboy Dec 11th, Thomastown Dec 15th and Graiguenamanagh Dec 16th. Each show commences at 6.30pm. Keep a look out for the Kilkenny Over 50’s Directory that will be available to pick up all over the county over the following weeks from libraries, health and community centres as well as the Age Friendly office at 42 Parliament Street.  This Directory provides information on many of the services available for Older People in Kilkenny City and County, including community and voluntary organisations, HSE and other public services.
The need for this Directory was identified during the consultation with older people in the City and County during the development of Kilkenny’s Age Friendly County Strategy. Having local information available in a user and age friendly way is important to everyone. While most information is available on the internet we recognise that not everyone has or wants to have access to information on line.
Have you ever wanted to publish your own book? Have you ever wondered about the world of self-publishing?  Have you ever wanted to see your work on the shelf of your local book store? Well now you can! Local author Brian Kennedy is both a published & self-published author.  Brian can talk you through starting with that very first page, talk you through the do's & don'ts of getting your book to print, then help you with agents, advertising, the power of using social media, design & look of your book - all the way to the book launch and the celebration of your book on a book store shelf. Come along to Ferrybank Library on Wednesday 25th November 2015 at 6:00-7:00pm to find out more.

BEFRIENDERS BEAT LONELINESS
Loneliness costs lives. It is linked to a range of chronic conditions, including high blood pressure and depression, and more than doubles the risk of developing dementia. On average, 10% of the population aged over 65 is chronically lonely. Nor is it just an issue for elderly people-research shows that up to half of younger people are lonely also.
Supported by St Canice’s Community Action in the Community and funded by HSE Older Person Services, Kilkenny & Carlow Contact is working to beat loneliness, with the help of 130 volunteer befrienders who do a brilliant job by spending time with people who are lonely or may be experiencing isolation due to loss of independence because of bereavement, or ongoing varying health issues.
This year’s Befriending Week is the first week in November, and Kilkenny & Carlow Contact is using this opportunity to promote what we do and to raise awareness of the impact volunteer befrienders have on the lives of the people we  support.
“The role of a befriender is very rewarding. In my experience the older person values the time you take to visit them. They are open and honest and very respectful of the relationship you build with them. I would encourage anyone wishing to volunteer to try a befriending programme as you will get a lot more out of it than you put in." Volunteer P.Nolan August 2015
You can show your appreciation of befrienders, and their work towards beating loneliness, in one click of your mouse. An online befriending ‘Thunderclap’ will be launched on 6th November at 12 noon. By clicking this link  https://www.thunderclap.it/projects/31225-befrienders-beat-loneliness, all your social media contacts will receive the Thunderclap at the same time, which means they will see a message about what befriending is and why we need it.

County Kilkenny launched its Age Friendly County Programme in March 2010 and was the second County in Ireland to do so. Following twenty one public consultation meetings with older people in the City and County in June and July 2010 Kilkenny produced a report entitled “Having you Say” which formed the basis for Kilkenny’s Age Friendly County Strategy which was launched by Hollywood Legend Maureen O’ Hara in March 2011. The Kilkenny Age Friendly County Strategy was adopted by the County Development Board in April 2011.
Since then a number of initiatives for older people in Kilkenny City and County have been established and Kilkenny has become approved as a Member of the WHO Global Network of Age Friendly Cities in September 2011.
Kilkenny Age Friendly County Alliance
Each county’s programme is led by an Alliance, chaired by the County Manager, comprising the most senior decision makers from the key public, private and not-for-profit agencies involved in providing supports and services to older people and who are responsible for the delivery of the strategy e.g. Local Authority, HSE, Gardaí, Leader Partnerships, Carers groups, Community and Voluntary groups.
